Children at play have always been favorite subjects to paint.
One warm summer's day, while attending a Civil War reenactment at Roaring Camp Railroad and Park near Santa Cruz, California, I observed these two little girls. The park was bustling with activity. Men in authentic-looking Civil War uniforms, representing both the North and the South, accompanied by their wives and children, also dressed in costumes of the period, were giving a "living history lesson." The girls were obviously delighted to be playing "dress-up" with their over-sized chalk and old-fashioned slates. I found it interesting and moving that, surrounded by "fierce-looking" soldiers, cannons and other trappings of war, these little girls had chosen hearts, the symbol of love, as the subject of their artwork. These little "hearts" were making hearts. I had come expecting to find material for painting a war epic. Instead I found the inspiration for “Hearts.” |
