My source was a photo taken at one of those Renaissance Faires that have become
so popular, especially in California. Although this character was just a random face in the crowd, I was attracted not only to his rough-hewn face, scraggly beard and fur-lined hat, but to the late
afternoon light which illuminated him. His costume suggested a Russian character to me. This has been the most honored of all my paintings to date because it won the "Best of Show" Award in the Pastel Society of the West Coast's 20th Annual Pastels USA National Exhibition in 2006, and just months later took another "Best of Show" in the Society of Western Artists 56th Annual Exhibition in San Francisco. It was also published in the Pastel Journal Magazine to highlight the Pastels USA Exhibition in Auburn, California shortly after the end of that show. |
